Connect worthtracker to AI assistants
worthtracker runs a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client and ask questions such as "how has my net worth changed this year?" or "set my brokerage account to 26,500".
https://worthtracker.net/api/mcpIt uses the Streamable HTTP transport. There are two ways to sign in: OAuth, where you approve the app in your browser (the best choice for Claude and ChatGPT), or an API key sent as a header, for clients that do not support OAuth.
Claude
Claude on the web and desktop
- 1Open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
- 2Name it worthtracker and paste the server URL above.
- 3Choose Connect. A worthtracker window opens. Sign in if it asks.
- 4Check the app name and the access it asks for, then choose Allow.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http worthtracker https://worthtracker.net/api/mcpThen run /mcp in Claude Code and choose worthtracker to sign in. To use an API key instead:
claude mcp add --transport http worthtracker https://worthtracker.net/api/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer wt_your_key_here"ChatGPT
- 1Open Settings, then Apps and Connectors. Custom connectors need developer mode, which you turn on under Advanced settings.
- 2Create a connector, name it worthtracker, and paste the server URL above.
- 3Choose OAuth as the authentication method and save.
- 4Sign in to worthtracker in the window that opens, check the access it asks for, and choose Allow.
The menu names change from time to time. If you cannot find them, search the ChatGPT help for custom connectors.
Other clients, with an API key
Create a key in Settings, under API and AI apps and send it as a bearer token. Most clients take a configuration like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"worthtracker": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://worthtracker.net/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer wt_your_key_here" }
}
}
}The key gives full read access to your financial data, so keep it private and revoke it if it leaks.
What the assistant can do
Read tools work on every plan. Tools that change data need the write scope, which needs a Pro or Family plan. On the Free plan the approval screen grants read access only. On Pro and Family you can untick write to connect an app with read access only. If it later tries to make a change, it asks you to reconnect with write access.
| Tool | Scope | What it does |
|---|---|---|
get_net_worth | read | Get net worth |
list_assets | read | List assets |
add_asset | write | Add an asset |
update_asset_value | write | Update an asset's value |
list_liabilities | read | List liabilities |
update_liability_balance | write | Update a liability's balance |
get_history | read | Get net worth history |
take_snapshot | write | Take a snapshot |
list_goals | read | List goals |
Tool calls share the per-connection limit of 60 requests per minute with the REST API.
Access and disconnecting
An OAuth connection gets a short-lived access token that renews itself for 30 days. After that the app asks you to approve it again. We store only hashes of tokens and keys.
To cut an app off at once, open Settings, under API and AI apps and choose Disconnect next to it under Connected apps. Revoke an API key in the same place.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The assistant says it is not authorized | The connection expired or was disconnected. Connect again. |
upgrade_required | Writing needs a Pro or Family plan. |
insufficient_scope | The key or connection is read-only. Create a key with write access, or reconnect and leave write ticked. |
| Too many requests | Wait a minute. The limit is per key or connection. |
