How to track your net worth with an AI assistant
Connect worthtracker to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant and ask about your numbers in plain words. Here is how to set it up and how to stay safe.

Why talk to your numbers
A net worth tracker answers most questions if you know where to click. An AI assistant lets you ask in plain words instead.
worthtracker runs a hosted MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol that lets an AI assistant call tools in another app. Once you connect worthtracker, the assistant can read the numbers you have entered and, on a paid plan, update them when you ask.
Questions you can ask:
- "How did my net worth change since January?"
- "Which kind of asset grew the most this year?"
- "How far am I from my goal?"
- "What do I owe in total, and on what?"
Each snapshot in your history holds a breakdown of your assets by category, so for the second question the assistant compares categories such as property, stocks and cash over time.
On Pro or Family, you can also do your monthly update in one sentence: "Set my brokerage account to 26,500 and my mortgage to 182,300, then take a snapshot."
One thing does not change. worthtracker has no bank connections. You type your numbers in, and the assistant sees only what you have entered.
What the assistant can do
The assistant works through a fixed set of tools. It cannot do anything outside this list.
Read tools, on every plan, including Free:
get_net_worth: your current totals, and the value by categorylist_assets: your assets and their current valueslist_liabilities: your liabilities and what you still owe on eachget_history: your net worth snapshots over timelist_goals: your goals and your progress towards them
Write tools, on Pro or Family:
add_asset: add a new asset with its current valueupdate_asset_value: set a new value for an existing assetupdate_liability_balance: set the balance you still owe on a liabilitytake_snapshot: record your current net worth in your history
Read access
- Sees the numbers you have entered
- Cannot change anything
- Included on every plan, including Free
- Enough for questions and reviews
Write access (take more care)
- Can add assets and update values and balances
- Can take a snapshot
- Needs a Pro or Family plan
- You can untick it when you approve the app
On Pro or Family, the approval screen lets you untick write. The app then has read access only, even on a paid plan, and any change it tries to make is refused.
Each key or connection can make 60 requests per minute, and that limit is shared with the REST API. A monthly update uses a handful of tool calls, so normal use stays well under it. If you would rather write your own scripts, see the REST API docs.
Connect Claude
The server URL is the same for every client:
https://worthtracker.net/api/mcp
Claude on the web and desktop
- Open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it worthtracker and paste the server URL.
- Choose Connect. A worthtracker window opens. Sign in.
- Check the access it asks for, then choose Allow.
Claude Code
Run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http worthtracker https://worthtracker.net/api/mcp
Then run /mcp in Claude Code and choose worthtracker to sign in.
Connect ChatGPT or another client
ChatGPT
Custom connectors in ChatGPT need developer mode, which you turn on under advanced settings. Then:
- Create a connector, name it worthtracker, and paste the server URL.
- Choose OAuth as the authentication method.
- Sign in to worthtracker in the window that opens, check the access it asks for, and choose Allow.
ChatGPT changes its menu names from time to time. The MCP docs page has the current steps.
Other clients, with an API key
Some clients cannot use the browser sign-in. For those, use an API key:
- Create a key under Settings, API keys. Keys start with
wt_. You see the full key only once, so copy it then. - Send the key as a bearer token in the Authorization header.
Most clients take a configuration like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"worthtracker": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://worthtracker.net/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer wt_your_key_here" }
}
}
}
An example monthly routine
A simple routine: once a month, update the accounts that changed, take a snapshot, and ask one or two questions about the trend. On Pro or Family, the assistant can make the updates for you. On Free, you make them in the app and use the assistant for questions.
You: How did my net worth change since January?
Assistant: Your snapshot on 1 January shows a net worth of 208,900. Your latest snapshot, on 1 September, shows 221,500. That is a rise of 12,600, or about 6%.
You: Set my brokerage account to 26,500 and my mortgage to 182,300, then take a snapshot.
Assistant: Done. I updated your brokerage account from 25,800 to 26,500 and your mortgage balance from 183,100 to 182,300, then took a snapshot. Your net worth is now 223,000.
You: How far am I from my goal?
Assistant: Your goal is a net worth of 250,000 by December 2027. You are at 223,000, so you have 27,000 to go. That is about 89% of the way.
For the first answer, the assistant called get_history. For the second, it called list_assets and list_liabilities to find the right accounts, then update_asset_value, update_liability_balance and take_snapshot. For the third, it called list_goals. If your client shows tool calls, read them. Then open worthtracker and check that the two new values are the ones you asked for.
Privacy and safety habits
A few habits keep this safe:
- Know what the assistant sees. It sees what the tools return: your totals, assets, liabilities, history and goals. Those numbers then become part of your conversation, so the AI provider's own privacy terms apply to them.
- Read the approval screen. Before you choose Allow, check that the app name and the access match what you expect.
- Prefer read-only if you only ask questions. On Pro or Family, untick write when you approve the app.
- Review every change. When the assistant says it updated something, check the value in worthtracker.
- Check important numbers. An AI can misread a figure or make an arithmetic mistake. Before you rely on a number for a decision, compare it with the app.
- Revoke access you no longer use. Open Settings, API keys, and choose Disconnect next to the app under Connected apps. Revoke unused API keys in the same place.
Two more things work in the background. An OAuth connection renews itself for 30 days, then asks you to approve it again. And worthtracker stores only hashes of tokens and keys, not the tokens and keys themselves.
Get started with worthtracker
